CHARLES MACLEOD

Stornoway Black Pudding

Situated in the remote and rugged landscape of the Isle of Lewis, Charles Macleod is an institution of Scottish butchery. Founded in 1947 by Charles Macleod upon his return from wartime service, the business is firmly rooted in Ropework Park, Stornoway, on the very site where it began. Today, this proud family operation is guided by the third generation, including his granddaughters Rona and Shona, who ensure that over seven decades of uncompromising craft remain entirely intact.

A TRADITIONAL CROFTING STAPLE

The legendary Stornoway Black Pudding was born from necessity and a deep respect for the land. For generations, crofters in the Outer Hebrides relied on this recipe to ensure no part of their livestock was ever wasted. By carefully blending beef suet with blood, Scottish oatmeal, and a closely guarded secret seasoning, they created a rich, highly tactile provision that sustained islanders through harsh Hebridean winters.

This authentic recipe is still cooked daily on the premises in Stornoway. The resulting pudding delivers a profoundly moist, deep flavour and a robust, earthy texture that simply cannot be replicated by mass-produced alternatives.

PROTECTING TRUE PROVENANCE

The team at Charles Macleod are fierce defenders of genuine Scottish food heritage. To protect their exceptional produce from imitation, they campaigned tirelessly to secure Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status from the EU. This hard-won accreditation guarantees that true Stornoway Black Pudding can only be crafted in the Western Isles, preserving the economic well-being of the local crofting community and ensuring the highest standards of quality.
